Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of questions do you answer?

We focus on rabbit care, behavior, housing, diet, and health. We are not veterinarians, but we do our best to point you in the right direction and help you find a rabbit-savvy vet when needed. For medical emergencies, we always recommend contacting a vet immediately.

Do you offer veterinary consultations?

No โ€” we are not veterinarians and cannot provide medical advice or diagnoses. For health concerns, please contact a rabbit-savvy exotic vet. We maintain a vet finder directory to help you find one in your area.

Can I submit a guest post or share my rabbit's story?

Absolutely. We love hearing from rabbit owners. If you have a story, experience, or tip you would like to share, send us a message using the form above with "Guest Post" in the subject line. We read every submission and will get back to you if we think it would be a good fit for our readers.

I found incorrect information on your site. How do I report it?

Please use the contact form to let us know. Include the page URL and the specific information you believe is incorrect, and if you have a source we should review, include that too. We take accuracy seriously and will review and correct anything that needs updating.

How do I unsubscribe from the newsletter?

Every newsletter email has an "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom โ€” one click and you are off the list, no questions asked. If you are having trouble unsubscribing, send us a message and we will remove you manually within 24 hours.

How quickly do you respond?

We typically reply within 2โ€“3 business days. If your message falls over a weekend or holiday, please allow a little extra time. For time-sensitive health concerns, please reach out to a vet directly rather than waiting for our reply.

Common Questions Before Emailing

Can I get a rabbit if I work full time?

Yes โ€” many rabbit owners work full time. The key is making sure your rabbit has enough space, enrichment, and ideally a bonded companion when you are away. Rabbits sleep most of the day and are most active at dawn and dusk, which often aligns well with human work schedules. The important thing is the hours you are home โ€” rabbits need daily interaction, exercise time outside their enclosure, and mental stimulation. If you are gone 10+ hours every day, a second rabbit for companionship and a very spacious enclosure become more important.

Are rabbits good pets for apartments?

Yes โ€” rabbits can thrive in apartments. They are quiet, clean, and do not need to go outside to use the bathroom. The main requirement is space: a rabbit needs room to run and binky, not just a small cage. A pair of connected exercise pens or a large indoor enclosure works well in smaller spaces. Rabbits can be fully litter trained and do not have the noise or odor concerns of some other pets. They do need to be protected from cables and furniture they might chew, so apartment-proofing is important.

Do rabbits smell?

A healthy, well-cared-for rabbit does not have a noticeable smell. Rabbits themselves are very clean animals who groom themselves carefully. Smell becomes an issue when a rabbit is not spayed or neutered (territorial marking), when their litter box is not cleaned often enough, or when they are kept in an enclosure that is too small to allow proper separation of their sleeping and bathroom areas. With routine cleaning and spaying/neutering, rabbits are one of the least smelly small pets you can own.

Can rabbits live with cats or dogs?

It depends entirely on the individual cat or dog and how introductions are managed. Some rabbits and dogs coexist peacefully, especially if the dog has a low prey drive and has been trained to leave the rabbit alone. Cats are more variable. In general, dogs and rabbits should always be supervised when together, and the rabbit should always have a space they can retreat to that the other animal cannot reach. Prey-drive breeds โ€” terriers, hounds, sighthounds โ€” require extra caution and expert guidance before any contact.

How much does rabbit ownership cost?

A basic setup โ€” enclosure, hay rack, water bowl, litter supplies โ€” costs around $150โ€“300 upfront. Ongoing monthly costs are primarily hay ($15โ€“25), pellets ($5โ€“10), vegetables ($10โ€“20), and litter ($5โ€“10). Annual vet checkups typically run $75โ€“150, and emergency vet visits can cost $300โ€“1000 or more. Rabbits do not need annual vaccinations in most of the US, but RHDV2 vaccination is recommended in some areas. Budgeting $500โ€“800 for the first year is a reasonable planning figure.

I already have a rabbit โ€” can this site still help me?

Absolutely. The articles cover topics for owners at every stage โ€” from basic care to advanced enrichment, senior rabbit care, chronic health management, and behavioral questions. Use the search bar or browse by topic to find what you need. If there is something specific you are dealing with that you cannot find here, use the contact form โ€” Janie reads every message and does her best to point people in the right direction, even if it is to an external resource that covers the topic better than she can.
