About Janie M. Scott
Decades of rabbit care, written in plain English.
What We Stand By
Research-First Writing
Articles are written from knowledge accumulated over decades, cross-referenced with current veterinary consensus and rabbit science. When something is not fully understood, we say so.
No Gatekeeping
Rabbit care should not require a veterinary degree. We write for real rabbit owners in real situations — apartments, houses, single rabbits, bonded pairs, first-time owners, and experienced caretakers alike.
Veterinary Partnership
This site does not replace a vet visit. We clearly distinguish between general care guidance and situations that need professional veterinary attention. When in doubt, always consult a rabbit-savvy veterinarian.
Rabbity First
Every article is written from the rabbit's perspective first. What does this mean for the rabbit's wellbeing, safety, and quality of life? That question leads every piece of content on this site.
Important Note
The content on Keeping Rabbits is for informational and educational purposes only. It is not a substitute for professional veterinary advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always consult a qualified veterinarian for your rabbit's health concerns. See our full medical disclaimer for details.
Why Keeping Rabbits Exists
There is no shortage of rabbit information online. What is harder to find is information that is accurate, practical, and written from real experience rather than copied from generic pet care lists. Keeping Rabbits exists to fill that gap — to be the resource that rabbit owners actually want to read, not just the resource that ranks well in search results.
Every article on this site goes through a simple test before it is published: if a rabbit owner in a real situation read this, would it help them? Would it give them something they can actually do, or help them understand something they could not before? If the answer is no, the piece gets revised until the answer is yes.
Experience Across Breeds and Situations
Janie has lived with and cared for rabbits across a wide range of situations — young rabbits and seniors, single rabbits and bonded pairs, rabbits with chronic health conditions and rabbits who have never needed more than routine checkups. This breadth of experience shapes how the guides on this site are written: not from theory, but from the accumulated reality of navigating real rabbit care over years.
Rabbits are often categorized as "exotic" pets, which can make finding good information harder. The rabbit care community is smaller than the dog or cat community, and much of the good information is held in local rescues, specialized veterinarians, and community groups rather than mainstream publications. This site is an attempt to bring some of that knowledge into one accessible place.

Our Approach to Rabbit Care
KeepingRabbits.com was built on the belief that rabbits deserve the same quality of care as any other companion animal — not as novelty pets, but as intelligent, social creatures with complex needs. Every article on this site is written to help current and prospective rabbit owners provide the best care possible.
We focus on evidence-based, practical information. Our content is reviewed for accuracy and updated as veterinary knowledge evolves. We prioritize the health and wellbeing of rabbits above all else, and we believe that an informed owner is the best kind of owner.
Why We Exist
KeepingRabbits.com exists because most rabbit care information online falls into two categories: oversimplified "starter pet" content that does a disservice to both rabbits and owners, or dense veterinary literature that is accurate but not actionable for everyday care.
We try to sit in the middle. Our articles are written to be useful first, accurate second, and as complete as possible within that constraint. We update content when veterinary guidance changes, and we are transparent about what we know and what we do not.
